Hope's Life Story

Created by Grace 3 years ago
Hope was born at 85 Roundwood Rd, Northenden, on the 12th June 1963. She was the 5th child of James & Mary Riley, youngest sister to Paul, Jane Anne, Faith & Grace.

The family moved to 497 Palatine Rd, Northenden when Hope was 2, and this remained the family home until 2012.

Hope attended St Aidens Primary School, and having passed the 11 plus, followed her sisters to Loreto Moss Side, where she met and became lifelong friends with Sarah, Helen & Fr Francis Preston. Adele joined the group during sixth form, and this friendship became the deepest and most enduring, even as the girls moved through the phases of their lives.

Throughout her secondary school years, Hope helped at the Saturday Club, a social club for young people with a Learning Disability. Through this she became firm friends with Patricia, Yvonne, Janice & Paul. It was here also that she met the two year old Veronica, with whom she would form a loving bond and who would eventually be one of Hopes bridesmaids.

When Hope left school, unsure of what career path she should follow, she spent a year as a Teaching Assistant at Piper Hill Special School, before moving to Bognor Regis in 1982 to live with & support people with a Learning Disability within the L’Arche Community.

Influenced by these experiences and trips to Lourdes with Loreto, she had concluded that a career with people with a Learning Disability would be the one for her.

So, in 1983 Hope became a student nurse at Cranage Hall Hospital in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. By mid 1984, she met Lloyd, in somewhat inauspicious circumstances, despite which she took pity on him and they spent the next couple of years falling in love.

The latter part of Hopes training was spent outside of the hospital, in the vanguard of developing Community Services. The bonds of friendship formed during these early years with Christine, Elaine & Sue have endured. These relationships grew to greater depths, as first Christine & Pat had their children, then Elaine met Ron and the twins arrived. Of the many people Hope got to meet during her working life, a few deeper bonds developed. Adrian & Jenny, Sue, Harry & Charlotte and Rachel have all held special places in Hopes heart.

In May of 1986, whilst still students, Hope & Lloyd married at St Hilda’s church, Northenden. They moved to Sandbach in 1987, and December 1988 Grace came along, followed by Joe in October 1991.

During this period, when Adele married Dave, and when Lucy came along, the relationship between Hope and Adele not only continued, it grew deeper and more profound as the two families forged inseparable bonds that will last through the generations.

During her time in Sandbach, Hope has brought her faith into action, primarily but not exclusively as a catechist, guiding many young people through the rites of first Holy Communion and Confirmation, with Linda and Fr Moreton. Her strongly held beliefs, humanity, compassion and fun, must have been instrumental in 11 sets of parents looking to Hope to become Godmother to their child. This was a role she took seriously and enjoyed, especially watching each child grow.

Through this, and by her unstinting support in the activities of both Grace & Joe, Hope has been introduced to a lot of people, all of whom hold her in high regard and love.

After the child-based activities ended, many of these important relationships continued to develop, particularly with Jenny, Janet, Mike & Hazel, and the coffee crew; Sue, Barbara & Maria.
Hopes caring nature and phenomenal memory has been instrumental in maintaining long term relationships with many people who have become family friends, specifically, Tom, Freda, Emily & Thomas, and Lynn, Alan, Sophie & Luke.

In 2013, Hope was delighted to be Mother of the Bride when Grace married Tom, amazingly at Cranage Hall, which by this time had become a fine hotel. She was even more delighted on becoming Grandma to Matilda Mary in 2014, Martha May in 2016 and so very thankful to have met Margot Hope only 11 weeks ago.

In 2016, Hope & Lloyd celebrated their 30th Anniversary, with a party attended by friends & family. Joe provided the music, which always brought Hope a great deal of happiness.

By the end of 2016, increasingly poor health forced Hope to stop working, and sadly this meant she couldn’t travel to the wedding of Alex, son of long-standing family friends the Horspools.

And, in 2017 she was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, surviving for a full three years with determination & acceptance in equal measure. Her passage through the illness was eased immeasurably by the love and support of family and friends, and she died as she wished to; at home, with Lloyd, Grace & Joe on the bed with her.
